In 1999, the Teamsters General Executive Board voted to create the James R. Hoffa Memorial Scholarship Fund, a non-profit, stand-alone, charitable incorporated organization. The fund was created to increase the funding available for the education of Teamsters family members and to honour the memory of Teamsters General President James R. Hoffa and his legacy of educational philanthropy.
Over the past 20 years the fund has awarded over 5,000 scholarships, providing Teamster families across the United States and Canada with over $10 million dollars for tuition and expenses. Last year, hundreds more students-each one the child or dependent of a hardworking Teamster-received awards totaling $1.2 million dollars from the Scholarship Fund to support their education.
This year the Scholarship Fund marked the 20th anniversary with a fundraising dinner and I’m proud to announce that we raised over $1.2 million dollars. To quote the immortal James R. Hoffa: “Teamsters sons and daughters deserve the best education available. Education must be the birthright of every American (and Canadian), not just the children of privilege”.
